Meet Lauren Murphy

Tell us about your background: I grew up in San Diego and studied international relations at Boston University. Before coming to Rady, I worked in healthcare administration at Scripps Health, helping patients go through the challenging process of obtaining a liver transplant. While there, I was inspired to get a Master of Business Administration degree so I could make a more strategic impact in the healthcare and life science industry and gain the skills to advance my career. I will be graduating with a master’s from the Rady School of Management in June 2019.
What are you studying/researching? I interned with the Healthcare and LifeScience Industry team at IBM in San Francisco for my summer internship between my first and second year in the program. Additionally, I have been a teaching assistant for the last three quarters for the “Health Program Management” course. At Rady, I have been the President of the Life Science Club, where I organized the first-ever Rady Life Science Trek which brought Rady students to companies like Illumina, ThermoFisher, BD, Nuvasive, and Resmed. I also was VP for the Women of Rady Organization, where I helped plan conferences focused on women in business.
Why UC San Diego? I chose UC San Diego's Rady School of Management because it offered a quant-driven MBA. I knew I needed to challenge myself to gain the skills most in demand today. I knew it would be a great fit after attending a Rady Preview Day where I met current students and alumni and was able to experience a lecture by Michael Meyer. My interest in the healthcare and life science industry is a natural fit for Rady, as it is right in the middle of the action in San Diego. Rady has been a great fit for me. The professors are amazing and I am so honored to have the opportunity to learn and know them. I also love the engaged community of students all following their dreams. I particularly enjoyed the opportunity to join a consulting project in Cambodia, where a team of six Rady students worked to make business recommendations to a social enterprise, Hydrologic. This experience was an amazing opportunity to apply my Rady master’s skills and make a social impact while learning about how to work in an emerging market.
